Plaswood Boardwalk Restores Access to Yorkshire School's Wildlife Pond
HEANOR, September 29, 2026— Amcor (NYSE: AMCR, ASX: AMC) has supplied its Plaswood® recycled plastic boardwalk system to Hepworth Junior and Infant School in West Yorkshire, helping restore access to the school's wildlife pond and woodland learning area.
The wildlife pond and surrounding woodland form an important part of the school's curriculum and Forest School programme, providing pupils with opportunities to learn about nature, biodiversity and sustainability through hands-on outdoor learning.
The school's existing timber boardwalk, which circled the wildlife pond, had been in place for more than 25 years. Constant exposure to wet conditions meant the structure had deteriorated over time despite ongoing repairs, creating the need for a replacement solution that could withstand the site's challenging environment.
Manufactured in the UK from at least 95% recycled plastic, a material manufactured at Amcor's Dumfries, Scotland facility from at least 95% recycled plastic. The material incorporates post-consumer recycled rigid plastic that is made from recycled bottles and containers, waste as well as a proportion of recycled agricultural stretch films, helping transform recovered plastics into durable products for long-term infrastructure applications.
Plaswood was selected for its suitability in wet conditions, low-maintenance properties and use of recycled plastic materials. The material also enabled the new boardwalk to follow the existing curved layout around the pond, helping preserve the character of the woodland setting while improving access to the outdoor learning environment.
Mark Crouch, headteacher at Hepworth Junior and Infant School, said "Our woodland is now an essential element of our curriculum and our thriving Forest School programme. We chose Plaswood because the boardwalk is located in a permanently damp environment, with posts standing in water and the frame sitting on mud. We wanted a material that would last a long time and wouldn't rot.
As an eco-school, it was important for us to choose a product manufactured from recycled materials. This aligns with our environmental values and provides a practical example to pupils of the value of recycling.
The materials look good in our woodland setting. They aren't as slippery as previous timber structures and have helped create a safer surface for our pupils to walk on. The finished project looks fantastic and fits naturally within the woodland. I believe it will last for many years and require significantly less maintenance than timber."
Alistair Richardson, sales manager at Amcor, said "Schools, parks and conservation areas often face challenges maintaining infrastructure in wet environments. This project demonstrates how recycled plastic materials can be used in practical outdoor applications, helping organisations restore access to important community and educational spaces while incorporating recycled materials into their projects."
The completed installation has restored access to the school's wildlife pond and woodland learning area, allowing pupils to once again make full use of the space for outdoor learning and Forest School activities.
