Boardwalk Design Considerations

Boardwalks and Pathways are used for traversing natural landscapes and allow users to experience the environment around them without creating any negative impact to the area from pedestrian traffic. There are many design considerations to ensure you create the perfect boardwalk for your environment.

We manufacture Plaswood in either Black or Brown. In our experience the site very much dictates the colour and we supply a fairly even split between black and brown structures.

Depending on the type of installation handrails and kickboards are essential for the safety of the users especially on elevated sections. Handrails can be used on both sides however if you require handrails on just one side then kickboards are recommended on the opposite side to add extra safety for push chairs and wheelchair users.

Many Boardwalks start at floor level however applications where the walkway needs to be elevated we can supply steps or for inclusive accessibility we can create ramps for wheelchair users and those users with reduced mobility.

Due to the typical nature and location of the application we invariably incorporate viewing platforms in the boardwalk. Additionally, passing points, turning circles and pond dipping platforms are all popular additions to help make boardwalks perfect for their application.

Boardwalk Construction:

Take a look at our Boardwalk Installation Video which shows a typical installation process.

Plaswood Recycled Plastic Lumber is a fantastic alternative to timber and delivers many advantages when used for boardwalk construction.

There are a few things to consider when constructing a boardwalk from Plaswood:

  • Standard Widths - 1.2m, 1.5m, 1.8m and 2.0m
  • Recommended Hand Rail Heights - 1.2m Above Boardwalk Deck Boards
  • Maximum Post Span - 1000mm
  • Post Heights - Min. 500mm in firm ground – In Marsh or Wetland the length will vary and depend on conditions. Overall post length varies from application to application depending on finished decking height required.
  • Bearers - 50mm x 120mm (for post reinforcement)
  • Joists - 50mm x 120mm Max. 500mm span (for enhanced structural integrity)
  • Decking Boards - 40mm x 150mm (5 to 10mm gap in-between boards)
  • Hand Rail Dimensions - 50mm x 100mm
  • Kick Board - 50mm x 50mm For use where no hand rail is present to add extra security for wheelchair users and pushchairs
